How to play Tic-Tac-Toe
- The board is a 3 × 3 grid. Whoever opens the game plays X and goes first; the other player is O.
- Take turns placing your mark in an empty square.
- Three of your marks in a row — across, down or diagonally — wins.
- If all nine squares fill up with no line, it is a draw. In the next game the other player opens.
How to play with a friend
- Tap “Play with a friend” above. RoomDrift opens a Tic-Tac-Toe game and gives you a six-character code.
- Send the code or the invite link to your friend — any messaging app works.
- Play. The game starts the moment they join, with a chat beside the board.
Tips to win
- Open in the centre or a corner. The centre is part of four possible lines, a corner of three, an edge of only two.
- Always block two in a row. Before you look for your own line, check whether your opponent is one move from theirs.
- Build a fork. A move that makes two threats at once can't be blocked twice — that is how most games are actually won.
Questions
Can I play Tic-Tac-Toe with a friend online?
Yes. Tap Play with friends, and RoomDrift gives you a six-character code and an invite link. As soon as your friend opens the link or types the code, the game starts for both of you.
Who goes first?
The player who opens a game is X and moves first. Starts alternate, so in a rematch the other player opens.
Is perfect Tic-Tac-Toe always a draw?
Yes — if both players never make a mistake the game ends in a draw. Against a real person, though, mistakes happen, which is what makes it fun.
No sign-up, no download — Tic-Tac-Toe starts in your browser.
