What you don't have to give us
RoomDrift doesn't ask for your name, email, phone number, age or anything else to start chatting. There are no accounts and no profiles.
Messages
When you type a message, it travels through the RoomDrift server to the person you're chatting with and is shown on their screen. The server doesn't save messages or write their contents to its logs, and there's no database of conversations. When the chat ends, the messages exist only on the two screens — and disappear when you close the page.
Video and audio calls
Calls use WebRTC, the same technology used by major video-calling apps. Your video and sound go directly between your browser and the other person's, encrypted, and don't pass through the RoomDrift server. Some networks block direct connections; then the call goes through a relay server run by Cloudflare, which passes along encrypted data it can't read.
A direct connection means the other person's browser connects to yours, which can expose your IP address to their device — true of almost every peer-to-peer calling app. Text chat doesn't do this. A VPN hides your real IP address if you want to call without sharing it.
Your camera and microphone are only switched on when you start a call or turn them on yourself, and only after your browser asks your permission.
What the server keeps, briefly
- Who's connected right now, as random temporary IDs, so it can pair people up. They're forgotten when you disconnect.
- Private room codes, while the room is open. When the last person leaves, the room and its code are deleted.
- How many people are online — a single number, with nothing about who they are.
- Technical logs: the IP address and time of each connection to the server, and events such as “two connections were matched” or “a room was opened”, recorded with the temporary IDs and room codes. They never contain what you said.
In your browser
RoomDrift saves one thing on your device: whether you chose the light, dark or system theme. There are no advertising cookies, no tracking pixels and no analytics.
Services involved
Like most websites, RoomDrift runs on other companies' infrastructure. Each keeps its own standard logs, such as the IP addresses that make requests, under its own privacy policy:
- Netlify hosts the website.
- Render runs the chat server that pairs people and passes messages.
- Cloudflare provides the domain and the call relay described above.
- Google serves the app's graphics engine and fonts, and Firebase libraries that are loaded for an optional sign-in feature that is currently switched off.
Children
RoomDrift is for adults aged 18 and over and isn't meant for children.
