Random video chat with strangers

Meet new people face to face, straight from your browser. RoomDrift connects you to a random stranger on a video call, and one tap moves you on to the next.

How random video chat works

  1. Pick Call on roomdrift.com and tap Start calling.
  2. Allow your camera and microphone when your browser asks. RoomDrift only asks at this point — never just for opening the site.
  3. You're matched with another person who's looking for a call, and you see and hear each other right away.
  4. Tap Next for a new stranger, or the red button to end the call.

Your camera, your call

You stay in control of what you share. You can switch your camera or microphone off at any point during a call, and they stay off until you switch them back on. If you'd rather not be seen at all, use text chat instead.

The video and audio travel directly between your browser and the other person's, encrypted, using the same WebRTC technology as the big video-calling apps. When a direct connection isn't possible — on some mobile networks and office Wi-Fi — the call is passed through a relay server instead, still encrypted.

Getting a good picture and sound

  • Face a window or lamp, not away from it, so people can see you.
  • Use earphones to stop the other person hearing themselves echo.
  • On a phone, hold it at eye level and keep the browser in the foreground; switching apps can pause your camera.
  • Can't see or hear anyone? Check that the browser has camera and microphone permission for roomdrift.com in its site settings, then start again.

Staying safe while you chat with strangers

RoomDrift is for adults aged 18 and over. Whoever you meet is a stranger, so treat the chat that way:

  • Keep personal details to yourself — your full name, address, school, workplace, phone number and social accounts.
  • Skip anyone who makes you uncomfortable. You never have to explain; tap Next or end the chat.
  • Don't open links or files from people you've just met, and never send money or passwords. RoomDrift will never ask you for either.
  • Assume you could be recorded. The other person can always point another camera at their screen, so don't show or say anything you wouldn't want saved.
