How to talk to strangers on RoomDrift
- Open roomdrift.com in your browser, on your phone or computer. There's nothing to download and no account to make.
- Choose Call or Text. A call is face to face with video and sound; text keeps your camera off entirely.
- Tap Start. RoomDrift finds someone else who's looking and connects the two of you, usually within seconds.
- Say hello — or skip. Tap Next to move on to a new person at any time, or end the chat when you're done.
Why people chat with strangers
Talking to someone you'll probably never meet again is oddly freeing. People use RoomDrift to practise a language with a native speaker, to get a fresh opinion on something they're stuck on, to kill time on a late night, or just because a random conversation can be the best part of the day.
Because you're matched at random, every chat is different. You might land on a student in another time zone, someone on their commute, or a person who shares a hobby you didn't expect.
Tips for a good conversation
- Open with a question rather than just “hi” — where they are, what they're up to, what they'd recommend.
- Check your setup before a call: decent light in front of you, not behind, and earphones to avoid echo.
- It's fine to move on. Not every match clicks, and skipping is part of how it works for everyone.
- Want to keep talking to someone you know? Open a private room and send them the code instead.
Staying safe while you chat with strangers
RoomDrift is for adults aged 18 and over. Whoever you meet is a stranger, so treat the chat that way:
- Keep personal details to yourself — your full name, address, school, workplace, phone number and social accounts.
- Skip anyone who makes you uncomfortable. You never have to explain; tap Next or end the chat.
- Don't open links or files from people you've just met, and never send money or passwords. RoomDrift will never ask you for either.
- Assume you could be recorded. The other person can always point another camera at their screen, so don't show or say anything you wouldn't want saved.

Questions
Is it free to talk to strangers on RoomDrift?
Yes. There's no sign-up, no subscription and nothing to pay.
Do I need an account?
No. Open the site and start. Nobody on the other side sees a name or profile unless you tell them.
Are my chats saved?
No. Text messages are passed straight through to the other person and not stored, and calls go directly between the two browsers, encrypted. When you leave, the chat is gone.
