How text chat works
- Open roomdrift.com and choose Text.
- Tap Start chatting. You'll be paired with someone else who chose text.
- Type away. Your messages appear for the other person instantly.
- Tap Next for a new person whenever you like.
Why choose text over video
Text chat suits the moments when video doesn't: you're somewhere public, it's late, your connection is slow, or you'd simply rather be heard than seen. It's also gentler for language practice — you get time to think about each reply.
In text mode RoomDrift never asks for your camera or microphone, so there's nothing to accidentally turn on.
Anonymous by default
There's no account and no profile. The other person sees only what you type. Messages are passed straight through to them and aren't stored, so when the chat ends, it's gone.
Want a group conversation with people you know? A text private room holds up to ten people.
Staying safe while you chat with strangers
RoomDrift is for adults aged 18 and over. Whoever you meet is a stranger, so treat the chat that way:
- Keep personal details to yourself — your full name, address, school, workplace, phone number and social accounts.
- Skip anyone who makes you uncomfortable. You never have to explain; tap Next or end the chat.
- Don't open links or files from people you've just met, and never send money or passwords. RoomDrift will never ask you for either.
- Assume you could be recorded. The other person can always point another camera at their screen, so don't show or say anything you wouldn't want saved.
